As the school year rapidly approaches an end, Lazar Vilotijevic ranks the 2011 National Elementary Chess Championship in Dallas, Texas, as the highlight of his year in 5th grade. Scoring 5.5 points with four wins and three draws, Lazar received the 12th place trophy in the K-5 Championship section. Lazar also placed 4rth out of 110 participants in the K-6 Blitz Tournament, winning ten out of twelve games.
Lazar enjoyed the formidable competition, the luxurious hotel, the tasty Mexican food, and the friendly participants, hotel staff, and Dallas natives. However, when asked what the high point of his experience was, Lazar replied, "My 6th game. It was my favorite game ever! (See the positon below.)
Lazar's shortest game in the seven-round tournament was two and a half hours; his longest was four hours. . . and he enjoyed each and every minute! Lazar explains, "When I play chess, it's like being in a different world-one with so many possibilities!"
