Alan Abrams

Teacher, Chess Instructor, Chess Author

Alan Abrams has 17 years experience as an elementary school teacher. For the last six years he has taught at PS291 in the Bronx where he developed a program that teaches students chess through a literacy-based curriculum that draws on the history of chess. This is the only classroom program of its kind.

Alan has worked closely with FM Sunil Weeramantry to write a remarkable book, soon to be published under the (working) title "The History of Chess." This book brings to life the fascinating lives of the world's most famous players and analyzes some of their most exciting games. The book serves as a backdrop for Alan's classroom program. Students look forward to the stories and the vivid accounts of the eras in which the players lived as well as to the chess lesson.

Many of Alan's classroom and private students have become avid tournament competitors, consistently winning top individual and team honors in both local and national tournaments.

A typical lesson from the upcoming book is presented here.
For an additional view of Alan's classroom work, see this 1999 article about the PS291 program.
