FM Adnan Kobas

Fide Master, USCF Senior Master

Adnan Kobas first rose to prominence in the chess world when he won the under-20 championship of Bosnia in 1974. He went on to win the Championship of Bosnia in 1978 and 1983. The following year, he finished in second place in the semi-finals of the Championship of Yugoslavia, and was seeded into the finals in 1984 where he competed against some of the strongest Grandmasters in the world.

Now a naturalized U.S. citizen, Mr. Kobas has retired from his position as an Electromechanical Technologist with Duracell to resume his chess activities. He won the Connecticut State Championships in 1995, 1996, and 1997, and continues to post excellent results in tournaments in the New England area. His most recent success was as first board on a team that tied for First Place in the U.S. Amateur Team East competition.

An experienced teacher, Mr. Kobas has coached numerous private students to national prominence. He worked for several years with Women's International Master Beatriz Marinello who used to direct the Chappaqua chess program. Mr. Kobas joined the NSCF staff in 2003.
