Fourteen year old International Master Hikaru Nakamura of White Plains, NY won the 2002 Continental Open,
scoring 51/2-1/2
against a strong field that was led by super Grandmasters Jaan Ehlvest and Ildar Igbragimov (both rated 2707).
On his way to victory, Hikaru defeated three Grandmasters, Alexander Stripunsky, Alexander Shabalov and Pavel Blatny.
He scored an easy draw against IM Kimil Miton in the last round to clinch the title.
Hikaru's round 5 win against Blatny featured a sacrifice of the exchange to create a passed pawn.
