Pre-schooler Ben Rabinowitz beats the big kids
It is unusual for pre-schoolers to compete effectively in rated scholastic
tournaments, where everyone they meet is older and likely more experienced. It is even more unusual for
pre-schoolers to dominate such tournaments. On May 18, 2003, at the Ramaz Chess Championships IX, the unusual happened.
Ramaz pre-K student Benjamin Rabinowitz won the K-1 Section with a perfect 4-0 score.
Students from various schools including Hunter, Heights, Lab School and SAR
participated in the Ramaz Championships. It was the first time in the nine year history of the tournament that
a pre-K student won the K-1 championship. In the final round, Ben beat Heights School first-grader Chris Yao to land in a tiebreak
with Ramaz first-grader Justin Haber, then beat Justin
in a tie-breaking 5 minute blitz game to win the K-1 Championship outright.
