Hikaru Nakamura surpasses Bobby Fischer's ratings record
August 31, 2012. U.S. #1 (and World #5) GM Hikaru Nakamura has broken former world champion Bobby Fischer's record as the historically highest rated U.S. player ever! After he defeated GM Krishnan Sasikiran of India in the 4th round of the 2012 World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Nakamura's rating rose above 2786 on the live ratings list, surpassing Fischer's peak FIDE rating of 2785, obtained when he won the World Championship from Boris Spassky in 1972 - a record that stood for 40 years!   More about Hikaru.

U.S. Chess Champion GM Hikaru Nakamura scores 29 wins and 3 draws in his Manhattan simultaneous
May 31st, 2012. "The very best thing ever!" - said by chess instructor Shiva Maharaj, who came from Chicago to join more than 100 other spectators and players in the NSCF fundraising event at KIRKLAND & ELLIS, LLC. In the simultaneous exhibition, U.S. Champion GM Hikaru Nakamura, now rated #5 in the world, cruised through 32 boards, mostly teams of two, including National and International Masters. He yielded draws to FM Aleksandr Ostrovskiy and to the teams of Oliver Kanders & Michael Ellenbogen and Dylan Gerstenhaber & IM Milos Scekic. Among the chess dignitaries attending was Dr. Frank Brady, the founding editor of Chess Life magazine and author of one of the best-selling chess books in history, Profile of a Prodigy, the biography of Bobby Fischer. In the opening ceremony, NSCF board member Jay Hack presented Hikaru with a T-shirt and a mounted scoresheet commemorating the first USCF-rated tournament Hikaru ever played in - the NSCF-sponsored 1995 U.S. Junior Chess Congress East. Jay pointed out that Hikaru's first USCF rating was 684 and it is now 2200 points higher, so don't worry about your current rating. Just keep playing and studying and you can get there too!
