Success at SuperNationals II
IM-elect Hikaru Nakamura of White Plains, and National Masters
Noah Siegel of Dalton and Samson Benen of Hunter all scored 6.5-0.5 to to emerge as co-champions in
the K-12 Championship at the Supernationals in Kansas City.
This trio finished ahead of a strong field which included IM Irina Krush. Samson,
who drew Hikaru in the 6th round, led the Hunter College High School team to first place.
Hunter teams also won in the K-9, K-3, and K sections.
NSCF Grand Prix leader Gregory Fernandez of Manhattan Center scored 6-1 to tie for 5th
in the K-12 under 1300 section. Sarah Carvalho of the
Columbus Ave. School, New Rochelle (coached by Mark Hegenauer)
scored 6-1 to tie for 5th in the K-3 under 800.
JHS 45 finished tied for 7th and 8th in the large K-12 under 1000 and under 1300 sections.
Greenwich Country Day School finished 5th in the K section.
Other NY area winners:
Robert Hess of Browning won the K-3 Championship;
K individual was won by Tamir Korin of Hunter; Dalton won the K-8 Championship;
CES 70, Bronx won the K-6 under 900;
IF 318, Brooklyn won the K-8 under 750.
