Chess in Westchester

Lena Gershenov (Ben’s mom) has graciously offered to host tournaments at her home on Friday evenings, once or twice a month, and also put up a portion of the prize fund. Food and refreshments are generously provided by our hosts.

Four new tournaments at the Gershenovs
Chess at the Gershenovs returns for the Fall 2003 Season with four one-day tournaments:
- Saturday, October 18 and Sunday, November 23 will each feature 3-round game/90 tournaments.
- Saturday, November 15 and Sunday, December 21 will each feature 4-round game/75 tournaments.

News of Prior Events

Handicap Speed Tournament a big success. On Friday October 18, 2002, the Bronx/Yonkers Club club held a Handicap Speed Tournament at the White Plains Recreation Center. It drew 20 players. The event was won by National Master Lonnie Kwartler. NM John Riddell won a playoff for second against Furqan Tanwir ("Khan"). See pictures here and here.

White Plains November 2002. The October/November Action tournament was a six player round-robin at game in 30 minutes. It was won by National Master Lonnie Kwartler and Furqan Tanwir, both at 4-1. The under-1600 prize was won by Zen Kikuchi-Wellman. Zen also won the upset prize for defeating Polly Wright.

Khan wins November Swiss Action. Furqan Tanwir("Khan") continued to bring his USCF rating up by winning the second White Plains g/30 tournament. This one was a 4-round Swiss-System. Khan went undefeated at 4-0, defeating two masters aong the way. NM Lonnie Kwartler finished second at 3-1.
